The Things My Father Never Taught Me

With his comedic short ‘The Things My Father Never Taught Me’ recently accepted into its one hundredth film festival, SAE senior lecturer/writer/director, Burleigh Smith, urges filmmakers to extend their audiences in his most recent appearance in FilmInk Magazine.

“Wide exposure is important for all films,” writer/director, Burleigh Smith, asserts. “Many short filmmakers I know put so much effort into production and little or no thought into distribution. There's no point in having a great film if no one will see it.”

With truckloads of well-received shorts to his name, Smith is to make a feature soon: a romantic comedy titled You Can't Play The Game If You Don't Know The Rules. While Smith maintains that the exposure of his short “has definitely raised my profile”, he admits it’s still frustratingly tough to get projects over the line. “I actually wrote a fifty-page television pilot script based on the short, had some popular Australian names attached and an Academy Award-nominated director and all of the networks passed,” he reveals. All the networks passed.
